Join us for a light lunch before Andrew discusses ‘Judith’s Diaries’ with a slide presentation.

Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein developed an interest in the Montefiores whilst at Leo Baeck College and this led to a Ph.D. on “Travel to the Holy Land in the first quarter of the 20th century.” An inspiration for that work came from access to two unpublished handwritten diaries of Judith Montefiore of tours round the continent of Europe and Ireland in 1823 & 1825. Two further diaries, from 1816 and 1817/18 were discovered in the Hebrew University.

In 1990 Rabbi Andrew and his wife Sharon replicated an actual journey the Montefiores made to Jerusalem in 1827, travelling overland and by sea, following the route the Montefiores had taken.

Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein is the Emeritus Rabbi of the Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue.
