Wednesday, 22nd March @ 12:30 pm

Header navigation

Join us at 12.30 for a light lunch before a presentation on “Jewish Chaplaincy in the British Armed Forces” by Jonathan Lewis.

Jewish Chaplaincy in the British Armed Forces was the creation in 1892 of Reverend Francis Lyon Cohen. Reverend Michael Adler was the first of the twenty-three Jewish Chaplains who served on the western and other fronts and in Palestine in the First World War. During the Second World War fifty-six Jewish Chaplains, including twelve locally recruited from within the Jewish community in Palestine, served in the Army and the RAF around the world, including at the liberation of Bergen Belsen concentration camp. Jewish chaplaincy continued through the days of National Service until today.  Jonathan tells a story of duty and service which abounds in colour and human interest.
