The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. As part of this, EcoSynagogue and the Board of Deputies are planning a range of events highlighting our faith’s response to the climate emergency. This includes EcoShabbat on the only Shabbat during COP26 – 5/6 November.
On Friday, November 5th, there will be two Shabbat service options:
- 7:00pm – Our regular MLS/MRS joint service, led by Rabbi Kathleen, which will have an EcoShabbat theme, and
- Liberal Judaism has organised a service and other activities to mark EcoShabbat. Eight Liberal Judaism communities will be coming together for this (See https://www.liberaljudaism.org/2021/09/take-part-in-ecoshabbat-2021-on-november-5-6/). There will be:
6:30pm – a short Friday night service with readings from Lay Leaders of LJ communities, followed by
7:30pm Kiddush and dinner discussion with Adam Jackson, former Chair of the Jewish Vegetarian Society – “How change in our diet can help our health and our Planet”
8:00pm Two speakers – Miriam Kennett, founder and director of the Green Economics Institute – “Why Net ZERO is not dayeinu” – and Student-Rabbi David Yehuda Stern
