28/29 October: Shabbat Bereshit

rabbipaulsmlShabbat comes in 5.26 pm: goes out 6.27 pm

Many commentators argue that the Torah is not meant to teach history or science.  It is not meant to teach us how our ancestors lived.  The Torah’s purpose is to teach us how to live.

The lessons just from Genesis alone are many —  that human beings are not here by an accident;  that we are made in the image of God; that in the eyes of God men and women have equal worth; that we human beings are tempted by our nature to transgress; that God has specific ideas about how human beings should behave; that there are consequences to the transgressions we commit and we are held accountable for our actions.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Paul Arberman
