Coming soon – This Mosaic Social Action Page is under construction
WHO ARE WE?
The Mosaic Social Action Hub is a new initiative. It has been set up to provide Mosaic members with easy access to a host of volunteering opportunities with our three local partner charities.
Our partner charities (see below) have been selected by our Rabbis to provide an interesting range of volunteering opportunities. However you choose to help, the support you provide will make a difference to the lives of local people in dire need. Hopefully you can find something that suits you.
OUR PARTNER CHARITIES FOR 2025
- Goods for Good – Supporting people to thrive by delivering essentials such as clothing, footwear, bedding and hygiene goods.
- Volunteers on Wheels – Distributing food and other supplies to over 30 food banks and up to 20,000 people each week.
- Firm Foundation – helping to relieve the immediate suffering of the homeless, while working with them to find a practical and sustainable solution to their needs.
WE ARE UP AND RUNNING – NEWS OF OUR LAUNCH EVENT HELD IN EARLY IN NOVEMBER 2024
Rabbi Anthony welcomed around 40 Mosaic members to the launch of the Mosaic Social Action Hub on the evening of Wednesday 6 November, explaining that however good we were at services, and at cultural and social events, Social Action has to be what a synagogue is really for.
The members then heard presentations from representatives of the three charities chosen for the first year of the Social Action Hub’s activities. We heard, in strict alphabetical order, from:
Firm Foundation CEO Julian Saunders: the charity works in Harrow to relieve the immediate suffering of the homeless, while working with them to find a practical and sustainable solution to their needs.
They urgently need volunteers to support the breakfast and lunch time drop in centres, and the Winter Night Shelter, which opens on 1 January 2025, supporting the homeless in the coldest months of the year for the 14th consecutive year https://firmfoundation.org.uk/
GoodsforGood founder and CEO Rosalind Bluestone MBE: the charity’s mission, from their base in north west London, is to accept donations of surplus goods from shops and businesses, and new or pre-loved goods from individuals and communities, and distribute them to those in need, locally, nationally and internationally
https://goodsforgood.org.uk/
Volunteers on Wheels founder and CEO Peter Phillips: the charity bridges the logistical gap between supermarkets and shops with surplus food, and food banks and other collection points for those in food poverty and insecurity. They urgently need volunteer drivers and shleppers, particularly as Barnet Council has recently terminated its funding to the Barnet Food Hub https://www.volunteersonwheels.org.uk/
Members then had the chance, over a cup of tea and a slice of cake, to mingle with the representatives of the charities and find out more about how we can volunteer and support their work. Around 2 dozen Mosaic members have already either volunteered with the charities, or are in contact with them to arrange “taster” sessions.
THINKING OF VOLUNTEERING – HOW TO CONTACT US
You can volunteer as little or as much as you wish, so there’s no long-term commitment required. All our partners will be delighted to welcome you to volunteer your time in a way that suits you and helps them.
